RPGs…where have they gone?
What with a new computer and all, I’ve been looking for some nifty new games to, erm, test if it works. I’ve been fond of RPGs in the past, and so I figured I’d look for some. Now, where have they all gone?
If I search for new titles that are RPGs, 95% of them are online, and I’d say all of them are diablo-style, meaning there’s lots of clicking, killing, and levelling. I’m a bit of a fan for storyline, character development, final fantasy III for snes-type games…and there were some good ones for the PC (Planescape: Torment comes to mind). I don’t want to pay for a subscription, I don’t want to have to complete “scenarios” or “levels”, and I don’t want to click quite so much. Does this mean I have to go to a platform for it? That I can’t afford. For now, looks like I have to stick to other standbys – downloading old RPGs from www.the-underdogs.org and playing more tactical/strategy games, like rise of nations.
Speaking of RPGs I’ve liked on consoles, I liked Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, Final Fantasy (SNES ones), Secret of Mana (ok, not quite rpg), Chrono Trigger…anything like that out for PCs?

Star Wars – Knights of the Old Republic.
Really really solid RPG gameplay. I’m not even that big a fan of the Star Wars universe, but this game has an uncanny ability to induce a zombie-like gaming stupor on me for hours on end. Solid, intrigue-filled story, fun characters, lots of optional nonlinear gameplay. The combat system is based on the same engine as Planescape: Torment, but ported to 3D graphics.

Karen and Tom just got me playing this: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/
Knights of the Old Republic is addictive but buggy as hell… same for the sequel but buggier and then seriously cut off the ending (but I think 2 was still better).

Hmm…yay recommendations! Tho I have to admit I’ve tried very very hard to stay away from Star Wars on principle…want an independently created gameworld, but eh, you can’t get everything…

Lightsabers are, without a doubt, one the funnest ideas ever ever; I wish I had one. Don’t let a marketing veneer (or the last/first? 3 movies) ruin what is essentially cowboys in space.

It also occurred to me that Anachronox was a really fun rpg for the pc… also Asheron’s Call, which I’ve never played, gets a lot of hype.
