$300 richer!

Category: UncategorizedCharlene @ 3:31 pm

Woo-hoo!

I was supposed to fly out, oh, 10 min ago from Atlanta, but they were overbooked. Hence, I leave tomorrow afternoon, and get to celebrate new year’s in Atlanta with bonnie rather than arriving in Seattle at 11:20pm, and I got a $300 voucher.

w00t, as some would say…I’m totally getting off the comp now to figure out what to do with this unexpected gift :)

AdventureDay

Category: UncategorizedCharlene @ 9:25 pm

Today, Bonnie and I went on an adventure. You should have to guess where, but I’m not sure it’s all that hard. Here are some pics of where we were (and bah resizing, I am tired and cannot be bothered):

rapids
fungus
me
eddy
ruins

I also had a cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper. It was…intermeresting. Also cooked lots - chili, spaghetti, chinese-style roast pork, and thai fried salty beef - for freezing and eating later. Still need to make the gingerbread, though…

Mail merge with Word and Thunderbird is a bitch, btw. Is there anything easier? >_<

Julia Roberts…

Category: UncategorizedCharlene @ 11:41 am

So…silly as it may be, I enjoy watching movies with Julia Roberts. Mostly cuz they’re somewhat to very funny and normally have a happy ending and are mushy. Still sillier, perhaps, is that I had never seen Pretty Woman. That is now remedied though.

Freaky/scary is all I have to say. With the retrospective lens on full-force, it’s pretty damn odd to see that Jason Alexander guy from Seinfeld attempting to rape a rather young Julia Roberts, then have a Richard Gere whose face now is less doughy, but hair the same, punch him in the nose. That and lots of Richard Gere chest and Julia Roberts…well…just about everything you can for a PG-13-ish movie. The skimpy outfit was totally disturbing :)

It kinda reflects to me a movie that certainly could not be made today. All these kindly men helping this prostitute (who flosses! doesn’t do drugs! isn’t all about the money!) transform Cinderella-like. All these prostitutes with kindly coworkers who encourage them to follow their dreams. All these…nice people. Comparing it to, say, Kill Bill, makes my head hurt. That and the 80s fashion. It was nice to see, though, that evening gowns’ styles don’t seem to change with the times at least.

It was like watching a Doris Day-Rock Hudson movie, only that it wasn’t all that long ago. Hence, the hair and the cars and the mergers. But the spirit was firmly in another era. Which is kinda sad, in a way.

Back in mostly one piece

Category: foodCharlene @ 9:15 am

Back from Durham, and with a bit of mixed feelings. I had a great time with Sharlene/Barb and Hilary/Marcus - great like-visiting-family-put-you-in-the-spare-room and make you homecooked food times…something I unexpectedly miss from when I was little, apparently. Great to see Ricardo and RR and old works people like Kevin and Hank and Dan…and good dim sum that I haven’t found in either Atlanta or Seattle, strangely.

At the same time, the whole trip rather reminded me of what made my time there so great - namely, the people. Bonnie and I thought about what we used to do, and it was mostly being with each other, seeing people, eating, or going to coffeeshops/BN. I loved it there, I think, cuz I was in a very happy living situation with my friends nearby too. That made everything better (especially the terrible driving there and the fact that everything’s closed on Sunday, it seems). And with NCLYN going down, there’s nothing there that I did that’s really left. This year’s the last year of people at the dorm I know…people are scattered and there are new buildings and construction oncampus as well as in Durham. Even Railroad has become a shop called the Maxxx or something (”A Frisky Business store”). Come on…Railroad was a Durham fixture!

Ah, well. It just has impressed upon me how much it’s about the people more than the place. Before we went up there, we thought, hmm, maybe we’ll live there again someday - we liked it. Afterwards, not so sure. We’ll see where people, including us, land.

But it’s still better than Atlanta :D

World may end…

Category: UncategorizedCharlene @ 1:34 pm

So……

I got some grades back. Apparently, I got a 95 on the final for Epidemiology, leading to a 3.9 in the class, and I got a 3.8 in Problems in International Health.

I expect everyone who has ever known me in college to faint….now.

I’m totally scared - something is deperately wrong. Although it *does* rather explain the lack of social life.

The other class I had a real final in, Biostatistics, was a disaster that morning. I was up (almost) all night but could not bring myself to study. And I *still* managed to be late. And while I was late, the parking people said I couldn’t park where I wanted to and that I had to go park at the stadium. I said “oh. ok.” and then parked illegally, as half hour late vs 15 min late for a 1 hr 50 min exam is a not so good idea.

When I got to the classroom, I found out that I had forgotten my calculator in the car. I had to sit on the floor at the back of the auditorium to take it, too. Thus, I am a bit apprehensive as to what my final grade was, as I was so flustered by this point.

I parked the car illegally two more times that day, but no tickets. Luck in some ways, and not in others :) Drank with co-students and took the shuttle directly from the pub to the airport - super cool and fun to finally get to relax. People in my dept. are pretty cool, so that helps, and some of em won’t be back next quarter :-/
