The original entry was about how Yahoo! had banned users from using the word “Allah” in screennames, but not words like “Hitler”, “Jesus”, etc., ad nauseum. Then, after negative publicity, they “reversed” the ban. Original link is here and shenanigans ensued with people then wondering if they’re now required to have the word Allah, given the phrasing….
But this choice reader comment made me laugh (sadly):
Yahoo Reverses Allah Ban
I think I’ve finally snapped from all the loonie news lately. My first thought was: “What!? Now you are required to have ‘Allah’ in your name? That’s even worse!”

And before you give me grief, in just the last few weeks:
- Hundreds of people have killed each other over a bunch of cartoons.
- The vice president of the US shot someone
- Bell South wants to charge Google for using its bandwidth when Bell South’s customers use Google’s services for free and already pay Bell South for the privilege.
- We are engaged in a huge debate, not over the fact that the control of our nation’s ports has been turned over to foreign governments in the first place, but rather over the fact that it may be racist to suggest that a nation that funded Bin Ladin, passed sensitive information to him, had top level meetings with him, recognized the Taliban, and was home to two of the 9/11 hijackers might not be trustworthy
- People have been caught distributing free software in accordance with the license, and had their CDs seized to protect the rights of the Authors who gave them permission in the first place

Made some totally verboten food today - 15-bean soup with salt pork and smoked sausage…mmm…though I only had a taste, as it was for the class potluck. I woke up at about 4:45am today to take Melissa to the airport, and I’m cleaning frantically, as I go to the airport again at 11am tomorrow to pick up Bonnie(!!! :D)
Need to clean the house; it’s a mess!
Work is silly as usual; I’m trying to do my work now so that Bonnie and I can hang out and do fun things all weekend, so here’s to that and collapsing in exhaustion from time to time
Two weeks until end of classes…then it’s all over again.
Peace Corps - no word, but definitely upping the nudging. Another person in my group is refusing her placement - they placed her and her husband in Africa, but gave her a placement teaching people how to use computers and him teaching English, I believe - he asked specifically to teach anything but that (he’s a high school teacher currently), and she, like me, is working on a MPH - and her placement should be health related too! Grr. Totally bumming.
I need a bath. And maybe a good brushing - and cutting. My hair is the longest it’s been since sophomore year of college, which means short ponytail length. I just have to find the time to get it cut…ugh. I can’t see most of the time - it’s always in my eyes.

Yes! For once, a non-graphic novel recommendation!
Jonathan Glover’s Humanity: A Moral History of the Twentieth Century
I still have a stolen copy from Yvonne…
Anyway, sometimes dense but totally readable I think - a thinking book…
