Mongolia FAQ

Charlene @ 1:46 pm

This is something I figured I’d send out so that people could rtfa first:

Mongolians speak Mongolian, which is in the Altaic language group, which is related to Turkic, Siberian, and sometimes Korean and Japonic groups. I’m a bit vague as it gets into linguistic things after that.

I got 3 months of training in-country, which included homestay, intensive language and culture training, and stuff. I then got placed in Khovd with UNFPA, which is a UN agency focused on reproductive health, population development, and gender issues.  If you’re curious about what actually exists in Khovd, here’s the Wikitravel entry that we all here have worked on, as well as a separate, more detailed site that our local business volunteer has developed called GoHovd.com

If you are interested in what other people are doing in Mongolia or pictures already there, there is a Peace Corps blog site that lists just about everyone blogging worldwide.  Here’s the Mongolia list, albeit some are old or no longer updated.  My former sitemate’s flickr photos from Khovd are awesome as is her blog, though this blog may not be updated much anymore.  Another fun blogs is here.  I’ve heard Patrick’s blog is funny, but don’t know the URL.

Believe I will make this both a blog entry and a page so that people can refer to it easily :)
