Headline of the week

Ignoring the rather scary and unflattering columnist photo, this is a gem: “If you feel a commotion beneath your feet today, that’ll be gazillions of unbaptised children moving out of Limbo

Julia Roberts…

Charlene @ 11:41 am

So…silly as it may be, I enjoy watching movies with Julia Roberts. Mostly cuz they’re somewhat to very funny and normally have a happy ending and are mushy. Still sillier, perhaps, is that I had never seen Pretty Woman. That is now remedied though.

Freaky/scary is all I have to say. With the retrospective lens on full-force, it’s pretty damn odd to see that Jason Alexander guy from Seinfeld attempting to rape a rather young Julia Roberts, then have a Richard Gere whose face now is less doughy, but hair the same, punch him in the nose. That and lots of Richard Gere chest and Julia Roberts…well…just about everything you can for a PG-13-ish movie. The skimpy outfit was totally disturbing :)

It kinda reflects to me a movie that certainly could not be made today. All these kindly men helping this prostitute (who flosses! doesn’t do drugs! isn’t all about the money!) transform Cinderella-like. All these prostitutes with kindly coworkers who encourage them to follow their dreams. All these…nice people. Comparing it to, say, Kill Bill, makes my head hurt. That and the 80s fashion. It was nice to see, though, that evening gowns’ styles don’t seem to change with the times at least.

It was like watching a Doris Day-Rock Hudson movie, only that it wasn’t all that long ago. Hence, the hair and the cars and the mergers. But the spirit was firmly in another era. Which is kinda sad, in a way.
